About the Ledgerline project
Ledgerline provides general information on Irish pensions for people who work independently, from freelancers and contractors to sole traders.
The purpose of this website
When My Future Fund launched in January 2026, it brought most employees into a workplace pension automatically. The self-employed were left out: no employer, no auto-enrolment, no state top-up. Saving for retirement is still possible and often tax-efficient, but you have to set it up yourself, and the rules are not easy to find in plain English.
Our content covers PRSAs, age-related relief limits, questions to consider when speaking with providers and useful deadlines, using clear language.
Who publishes Ledgerline
Ledgerline is an independent publication offering general information.
How we check our information
We base our guides on primary sources and aim to review them after each Budget. If a qualified financial adviser completes an independent review, we will publish details of that review.
Reviewing and updating our guides
- We check figures—including relief limits, income thresholds, age bands and deadlines—against source material from Revenue, the Department of Social Protection, gov.ie and the Pensions Authority.
- Every guide displays its review date. We aim to revisit the content after each Budget and when relevant regulations are updated.
- Calculator results are estimates based on published guidance and should not replace advice that considers your individual circumstances.
- If you spot a possible error, please email us at [email protected]. We correct mistakes promptly and note significant changes on the page.
